Cynoglos aust4

BOTANICAL NAME:

Cynoglossum creticum

Family:

Boraginaceae

Status:

Blue hound's tongue is declared noxious in Bega Valley LCA in class 2. This weed is also on the Australian Government Alert List of 28 potentially very invasive weeds which are at present only known from a small number of infestations, for which complete eradication is feasible. There is an historical infestation near Eden in Bega Valley LCA, and a current infestation in the Towamba Valley to the west of Eden. The plant appears to be a garden escape.

Description

For details of the appearance and impacts of this weed, download the fact sheet below. The first photo above is Blue Hound's Tongue and the remaining photos are the similar and quite common native plant Cynoglossum australe . The native species has pale blue uniformly coloured flowers, while the weed has pale blue flowers with darker blue veins (thanks to Jean Tosti of www.jeantosti.com for the use of his photo). Apart from this they appear to be quite similar in habit, leaf shape and fruit shape and size.

Control

It is not legal to propagate or sell blue hound's tongue. Advise your local Council weed staff if you see anything which resembles this plant being offered for sale, or if you think you have an infestation.
